Our Emblem – Honouring Our Heritage, Inspiring Our Future
More Than Just a Logo
At The Black Belt Academy, our emblem is more than a symbol of who we are. It represents our respect for the origins of traditional karate, our gratitude to those who have dedicated their lives to preserving it, and our commitment to passing its values on to future generations.
Every element of our emblem has a story, connecting our academy to the rich heritage of Okinawa, the birthplace of karate.
The Mitsudomoe – Our Connection to Okinawa
At the heart of our emblem is the Mitsudomoe (三つ巴), a traditional symbol closely associated with the historic Ryukyu Kingdom of Okinawa.
The three swirling shapes form a continuous, unified design, reflecting the harmony and balance that we strive to develop through our karate training.
For our academy, these three elements also represent three essential aspects of personal development:
- Mind – Developing confidence, focus, self-control and the ability to make positive decisions.
- Body – Building strength, coordination, resilience and the discipline to continually improve.
- Character – Demonstrating respect, humility, kindness and the courage to help others.
These are our academy's interpretations of the symbol, inspired by the principles of traditional karate.
We believe that true martial arts training is about developing all three together. Physical ability alone does not define a martial artist; it is how we use our abilities and how we treat others that truly matters.
The Gold Ring – A Tribute to Higaonna Sensei
Surrounding the Mitsudomoe is a distinctive gold ring, an element of our emblem that holds particular personal significance.
The gold ring was chosen as a mark of respect and acknowledgement of Higaonna Sensei and his lifelong dedication to traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate.
His commitment to practising, preserving and sharing the teachings of Goju-Ryu has helped ensure that this remarkable martial art continues to be passed from one generation to the next.
For us, the gold ring represents gratitude, respect and the responsibility that comes with teaching traditional karate.
Just as the ring surrounds the emblem, the dedication of the masters who came before us provides a foundation for everything we teach today.
It reminds us that we are not simply teaching techniques. We are custodians of a tradition, entrusted with preserving its principles while helping our students grow into stronger, more confident and more respectful individuals.
The Blue – Our Academy's Identity
The blue of our Mitsudomoe was chosen as part of our academy's own identity.
While the emblem connects us to Okinawa's rich cultural heritage, its distinctive colour helps make it our own.
It is a reminder that although our roots are firmly grounded in tradition, every generation has a responsibility to carry those traditions forward and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Our Responsibility to Future Generations
At The Black Belt Academy, we believe the true value of karate extends far beyond the dojo.
Our purpose is not simply to develop skilled martial artists, but to help young people become confident individuals, respectful leaders and positive members of their communities.
Through traditional Goju-Ryu karate, we encourage our students to challenge themselves, support one another and recognise that real strength is demonstrated through kindness, humility and the willingness to help others.
Our emblem serves as a constant reminder of that responsibility.
We honour the traditions of the past, embrace our responsibilities in the present and work to create a stronger future through the students and families who are part of our academy.
Honouring the Past. Developing the Present. Inspiring the Future.
